At Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club, our primary purpose is to provide essential lifesaving services along our local coastline. 10 patrol groups made up of around 90 trained volunteers, generously give their time patrolling at Bunbury’s Back Beach and Koombana Bay. Our surf lifesavers patrol on weekends and public holidays throughout the season, typically committing to a half-day patrols. Our patrol groups also assist neighbouring clubs when extra support is needed.

Surf lifesavers are trained volunteers who play a vital role in ensuring the safety of everyone who visits the beach. Becoming a surf lifesaver is a rewarding, enjoyable, and fulfilling experience. As a volunteer, you’ll take on a range of important responsibilities — from performing aquatic rescues and administering first aid to educating the public about surf safety and potential hazards.

Throughout the summer, you’ll be an active part of our beach community, always ready to assist those in need and promote a safe beach environment.

BACK BEACH, BUNBURY

The beach faces west and receives protection from both Cape Naturaliste 50 km to the southwest and Beach rock reefs that lie off the beach. These produce a relatively steep beach, often fronted by a low tide terrace. While the beach is usually free of rips permanent rips are located adjacent to the rocky sections.

This is the main surfing beach for Bunbury and site of the Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club, which is located just south of Rocky Point. The Surf Club is one of the oldest in Australia, and the third oldest in Western Australia, having been founded in 1915. The beach is a near continuation of the long stretch of sand that extends north from Busselton.

KOOMBANA BAY, BUNBURY

Koombana Beach is a sheltered and scenic bay just minutes from Bunbury’s city centre, offering calm waters ideal for families, young swimmers, and beginner surf lifesavers. The beach is a popular location during the peak summer holidays, and our club proudly provides volunteer patrols on Sundays throughout this busy period to ensure the safety of beachgoers.

With its gentle conditions, Koombana is also a great training environment for junior members, water safety sessions, and introductory surf lifesaving activities.
